WRITE A STAND OUT CV

The importance of your CV cannot be underestimated. It is on this basis that a potential employer will decide whether to interview you or not, therefore it acts as your first foot in the door. Your CV is likely to be presented to your potential employer in a large pile together with other CVs and if you fail to stand out from the rest you may lose out. It is important to set out the relevant information in a reader friendly and digestible format so that it can be read easily. So, how can you stand out from the crowd, read our top tips.

What should A CV include?

Your CV should be clearly set out to enable a prospective employer to scan over it and still be able to quickly extract the key information. Your CV should always include:

  • Your Personal Details
  • A Personal Statement
  • Core Skills
  • Your Qualifications – including your grades and education info
  • Employment History
  • Any Previous Work Experience, include volunteering
  • Any Other key Information (spoken languages etc)

If your grades are not the stand out part, you should still include them since an employer could make assumptions in their absence.

CV Length

The average  CV is  around two pages . The longest part is normally to be the details of your existing employment or training, or work experience, where it is good practice to go into detail around the experience you have gained from your employment.

If you are new to law, and your previous work experience or training was in something different career before seeking to move into law, you should still include details around key skills and experience you have gained that could be relevant to your new chosen career path.

Previous Employment

The work/employment experience section is likely to be the section that a prospective employer will pay the most attention to and  therefore should be given the attention it warrants. In situations where you don’t have much work experience to speak of, you should use this section to highlight your training and accomplishments.  Time and effort should be devoted to providing a good amount of detail to make your CV really stand out.
